Local area residents banded together for the first-ever Hunt Highway litter clean-up event last Sunday, March 14th.
Although a similar "adopt a highway" program has existed for years, the adopt a county road program is a newer program and any road, highway or not, can be eligible. Hunt Highway, in spite of its name, is not a state route.
Fourteen large bags of trash and several large items of debris were gathered for County collection. The area covered includes a strip crossing state trust land, including a 26.2-acre parcel on the west side of Hunt Highway that was recently sold by the state land department for $2.35 million to BYPG Holdings, LLC last month.
Asked about future clean-up events, Carter indicated that the plan was to do another clean-up in early May before it gets too hot, and then start up again in November. "It's really an attempt to beautify our area, which has such great natural beauty already, that it's a shame to look out one's window and see trash floating around," Carter said.
