Former Florence Unified Superintendent's Thriller Novel Reflects School Crises Management

g9-stv
Gary Nine, the former Superintendent of Florence Unified School District, known for his instrumental role in the construction of Circle Cross K-8, Magma Ranch K-8, and Poston Butte High School, has embarked on a new venture. Retired since 2013, he has penned a thrilling novel titled, "Opie & Cleigh: A Lifetime of Love, War, School, and Murder in 92 Hours."

The seeds for Nine's writing career were sown two years before his retirement, a process that was nurtured during a challenging time. "My wife contracted Stage IV cancer and had to undergo chemo and radiation soon after I retired," Nine shared. "A lot of the book was written while I was tending to her."

Though it took a 12-year gestation period, multiple edits, and his wife's encouraging push to finally get the book published, Nine's debut novel hit the market on May 2nd.

With over three decades of experience in education, Nine's novel is a unique blend of fiction and factual crisis management. The premise revolves around a small town high school's response when its most popular student is brutally murdered.

"It's fiction, but the 'how' of crisis management is factual," Nine explained. Drawing from his vast tenure as a principal and superintendent, he painted a vivid picture of what educators and students experience during crisis situations. "Most of the time, schools do a good job dealing with crises, but educators often don't get credit because people don't understand all that goes into the response," he added.

The novel is not only an adventure into a writer's world for Nine, but it's also a fulfillment of a bucket-list dream. He has combined his life-long dedication to education with his creative process. "While this book certainly has a dark side, it does portray the educational side accurately," Nine pointed out.

Early reviews of Nine's book have been positive with over 500 copies sold already. His novel, which beautifully intertwines his life's work with a captivating plot, is available in paperback and Kindle editions on amazon.com. It offers readers an opportunity to experience a thrilling story while also gaining insights into the often-overlooked aspects of crisis management in education.
