American Legion Post 97 in San Tan Valley Makes History with First Female Commander

San Tan Valley's Joe Foss American Legion Post 97 has hit a historic milestone by electing its first female commander in its 14-year history, Katherine Pascoe.

Commander Pascoe is not only a trailblazer in this role but also boasts an impressive military career. With 26 years of service in the U.S. Army, during which she participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and held both enlisted and commissioned ranks, her election reflects the esteem and trust her peers place in her.

Commenting on her new position, Commander Pascoe expressed profound honor. "Being a commander carries significant responsibility, and being the first female in this role adds to the privilege. I hope to bring a unique perspective as a veteran and encourage more female members to join," she said.

During her tenure, Commander Pascoe intends to concentrate on the American Legion's core values, known as the four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. This focus is expected to bring fresh energy and attention to these essential areas.

Situated at the San Tan Valley Veterans Center, American Legion Post 97 sets itself apart. Unlike traditional Legion Posts, it does not feature a bar or restaurant, but instead functions as a community center, welcoming all members of the community.

In recent years, the American Legion has broadened its membership criteria. Membership was previously limited to veterans involved in armed conflicts, but it has since opened to anyone who has served in the armed forces since 1991.

Post 97 has served as a bedrock of the San Tan Valley and neighboring communities for many years. With a variety of activities, including blood drives, public meetings, and school functions, it exemplifies a commitment not only to veterans but also to the broader community.

As we welcome Commander Pascoe's leadership, the community looks forward to seeing the continued positive impact of American Legion Post 97. We extend our congratulations to Commander Katherine Pascoe on this historic achievement and eagerly await the developments to come under her guidance.

Let's continue to support Post 97 as it honors and serves the San Tan Valley community.
